Mysuru- India,Tucked away in the heart of Mysuru, the old court building stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural heritage. This stunning example of neoclassical architecture has been a part of the city’s landscape since 1885, witnessing numerous landmark cases and serving as the seat of justice for the city and its surrounding areas.
According to “The Royal City” book, written by T.P. Issar, the history of the old court system in Mysuru dates back to 1869, when civil courts were first established in the city through a notification issued by the Chief Commissioner on April 13, 1869.
The court underwent significant changes over the years, with notifications 235 and 236 issued on August 27, 1879, reconstituting the civil courts in Mysuru. These changes came into effect on September 15, 1879.
The old court building was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar X, who ruled Mysuru from 1868 to 1894. The building’s design was inspired by the Chicago Exhibition buildings, which were a marvel of modern architecture at the time.
As one approaches the building, the grand portico with Tuscan columns, supporting a pediment with a wrought-iron tiara-like crown, is a sight to behold. The central block, topped with a cut-off pyramid, repeated in the two wings, adds to the building’s grandeur. The arcaded verandahs, with their Tuscan and Corinthians pilasters, and moulded motifs, run all around the building, creating a sense of elegance and sophistication.

Today, the old court building serves as a reminder of Mysuru’s rich history and its commitment to justice. As we celebrate the city’s rich heritage, it is essential that we preserve and protect our architectural heritage, ensuring that buildings like the old court continue to thrive for generations to come.
